Emerging Public Leaders of Ghana and U.S. Embassy in Ghana Sign Agreement for PEACE Fellowship Program

Accra, Ghana -  Emerging Public Leaders of Ghana in partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Ghana and support from the Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) launched the Professionals Engaged Against Conflict & Endangerment (PEACE) Fellowship program. At the event, stakeholders of the inaugural program gathered to celebrate the continued collaborative efforts of FOSDA, the Ministry of Interior of Ghana, the Ghana Immigration Service, and the Ghana Civil Service.

The ceremony was attended by U.S. Embassy Ghana Press Attache, Kevin Brosnahan; Executive Director of FOSDA, Theodora Williams Anti; Chief Director of Ministry of Interior, Ghana, Adelaide Anno-Kumi; Executive Director of Capacity Building and Outreach of National Peace Council, Ghana, Janet Sarney-Kumah; Executive Director of Ghana Integrity Initiative, Mary Addah; and EPL Ghana Country Director Juliet Amoah among others.

The PEACE Fellowship is a 12-month program that will engage, empower, and equip 100+ selected young professionals with training, intending to enhance their peace-building skills to become early warning resources. With a specific focus on public service security professionals working in Northern Ghana, the program aims to bolster the service delivery of Ghana's critical security agencies in at risk-communities, by increasing the capacity of these young professionals, as well as youth and community leaders to maintain peace, resolve, and de-escalate community conflicts. The program will further contribute to strengthening public safety and security, building social cohesion, and effectively reducing the risk of extremist violence.

“The Program employs a Human Security Development and a human-rights based approach and an “each one to reach five” technique to ensure a multiplier effect, engaging both professionals and citizens simultaneously by sharing key learning, knowledge, and tools during community immersion visits thereby fostering peaceful communities and proactive citizens,” said Kevin Brosnahan, U.S. Embassy Ghana Press Attache.

These esteemed guests spoke briefly on a panel to attendees detailing this impactful initiative. Juliet A. Amoah noted that “a select group of 25 high-performing participants will undergo in-person practical training and community outreaches with the aim of developing them to become early warning resources who can contribute effectively to national peace building, improving security-civilian relationships and supporting the peace architecture in the select Northern Regions.”

This is the first project in a new initiative of the U.S. Embassy to prevent conflict and promote stability as part of the U.S. Strategy to Prevent Conflict and Promote Stability (SPCPS)  for Coastal West Africa countries (Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Togo).

The PEACE Fellowship program is set to begin implementation in the Northern, Upper-East, and North-East regions in 2024 to effect positive change and unity.
